April 2026 marked a significant achievement for Tesla, as the Model Y became the best-selling vehicle in Australia for the month.
This milestone underscores the increasing consumer preference for electric SUVs and Tesla's strong foothold in the market.

Data from the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) indicates that Tesla and Polestar collectively delivered 1,458 vehicles in April, more than doubling the 702 units recorded in the same month the previous year. The Tesla Model Y stood out with 822 units sold, securing its position at the top of the sales charts.

New South Wales led the charge in EV adoption, with sales in the state up 66% year-to-date compared to the same period in 2025. This growth reflects both heightened demand and a broader selection of electric models available to consumers.

Further evidence of the shift towards electric vehicles is seen in the insurance sector. NRMA reported a 121% increase in insurance quote requests for EVs in April 2026 compared to April 2025, indicating a growing interest among Australians in transitioning to electric mobility.

The dominance of the Tesla Model Y in April's sales figures highlights the accelerating acceptance of electric vehicles in Australia, driven by factors such as improved model availability, rising fuel costs, and supportive government policies.
