Geely EX2 Gives Budget EV Buyers a New Finance Puzzle

Low entry pricing is appealing, but the loan details still matter

Australia’s affordable electric vehicle segment is getting another serious shake-up, with Geely confirming local pricing for the EX2 electric hatch ahead of showroom arrivals from late July 2026.
The entry Complete variant is priced from $26,490 plus on-road costs, while the higher-spec Inspire starts from $30,990 plus on-road costs.
That places the EX2 among the cheapest new EVs available locally and gives cost-conscious buyers another alternative to weigh against small electric hatchbacks and compact SUVs already on sale.

For EV loan shoppers, the headline price is only the beginning. The Complete uses a smaller battery with a claimed WLTP range of 252 kilometres, while the Inspire lifts that to 345 kilometres. Buyers who mainly commute around town may find the lower-cost model sufficient, but those travelling longer regional routes or relying on public charging less often may see the larger battery as worth financing. The key is to compare the extra purchase price against the practical value of the added range over the life of the loan.

Geely is also using a launch campaign to build early interest. Buyers who order and take delivery between 12 July and 31 August 2026 are being offered a complimentary home charger and premium paint upgrade, with eligible customers also able to access a 0.68 per cent comparison rate over a 36-month finance term. That comparison rate will attract attention, but borrowers should still check the full contract, including deposit requirements, residual or balloon amounts, fees, early payout conditions and whether the short loan term suits their cash flow.

This is where a low advertised rate can become more complex than it first appears. A 36-month term may reduce total interest, but it can also mean higher monthly repayments than a longer term. Before committing, buyers should model repayments using the drive-away price, not just the list price, and include charging installation costs, insurance, registration and any optional accessories.

The EX2 also comes with warranty coverage that may help some lenders and buyers feel more comfortable about long-term ownership: seven years with unlimited kilometres for the vehicle and eight years for the high-voltage battery. Even so, resale assumptions for newer EV brands can vary, which matters if a loan includes a balloon payment or if the buyer plans to upgrade within a few years.

The broader takeaway is that cheaper EVs are improving access, but they do not remove the need to compare EV finance options. With more brands competing below and around the $30,000 mark, buyers have more leverage than they did a year ago. The smartest move is to treat the EX2 not just as a low-price EV, but as a full ownership and finance decision.
